I am currently 16 years, and the second year of high school. After graduating in 2009, going to Kent State University to get my degree in aviation technology with a specialization in flight. I want to become a pilot linea.La My question is, do I have to train now? I can work on my private pilot’s license before college, and saving about $ 6,000. I’m not sure what the flight school that would go if I decide to undergo training before college. Should be trained by 61 141 or? Or should I wait until college? All the building is appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Yes, you can…
Reason is very complicated but basically, if you have your private, they cant take it away, however, they cant give you more than 25% of the hours you have accumulated toward your next rating…. for example… if you have your private and you go to college with 65 hours, if your previous traingin was done with part 61, they can only give you credit for 25% of the next license… and because the minimum for a commercial license at a part 141 school is 190 hours, they can only give you 47.5 hours under part 161… thats not all bad however, I would reccomend trying really hard to get your private in 47 hours or less, that way all your hours can be counted… otherwise, you wasted time…
Finally, dont show up to school with “almost” enough time for your private, because, since you dont have it, they can only give you 25 percent of what is required… so if you come with 40 but no private, they can only give you credit for 25% of the required 35 (part 161 advantage)…
The difference is that Part 61 does not require ground school to go allong with your flight training… with part 161, you must have taken or be taking the required ground school as you do your flight… it makes training more continuous and thats why the FAA says that part 161 training is better and therefore, thats why you need fewer hours for your different ratings…
I went to college with my private, it helped me start flight instructing before the majority of my class…
The main difference in 61 and 141 is that the 141 school has an approved syllabus (that must involve ground instruction as well)and does not require a FAA Designated Examiner to give a practical exam ,(check ride) they can issue a pilots certificate.(temp) the FAA will mail the permanent one.
Part 61 requires slightly more hours of training (40) no syllabus required as long as all requirements in part 61 are fulfilled. Once your flight instructor is satisfied with your training;g they endorse you to take the “check ride” with an
DE.
If you start your training under part 61 and do not complete your training, you can finish up at the 141 school, just do it under part 61 rules and you will have to take a check ride. This is quite common. (I did it!!!)

Start flying now and get it when you are 17.
Its pretty expensive to live at any college, and if you stay at home while you train, then youll save alot.
It cost me $800 a month for a single room at the community college I got my ratings at.
Start it now, while you have less on your mind. College adds alot to your plate.
